OCHEYEDAN – State Senator David Johnson of Ocheyedan officially filed nomination petitions with the Iowa Secretary of State on Monday to seek re-election to the Iowa Senate this November.

Johnson, an assistant Senate Republican leader, was first elected to the Senate in 2002 after serving four years in the Iowa House. He represents Senate District 3, which includes all of Osceola, O’Brien, Dickinson and Clay counties, and four townships in Sioux County.

“I am truly honored and humbled to serve my constituents and the citizens of Iowa in the Senate. I especially appreciate the many Republicans, Democrats and independents who put my name in nomination. We can make Iowa a better place for all,” said Johnson, 59, who serves as ranking member on the Senate Agriculture Committee. “If re-elected, I will continue to be a strong voice for northwest Iowa.”

Johnson also is the top Senate Republican on the Health and Human Services Budget Subcommittee. In addition, he serves on the Appropriations, Education, Human Resources and Natural Resources committees.

With serious budget deficits caused by overspending and fiscal mismanagement, a growing unemployment rate not seen since the beginning of the 1980s farm crisis and the relentless threat of job-killing property tax increases, Johnson says Iowans want their legislators to focus on holding government within its means, keeping taxes low and making it easier for private-sector jobs to be created.

“I would like to see future generations of Iowans have the same opportunities that so many of us have enjoyed in this state,” he added.

Formerly the chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee, Johnson recently ended four years as president of State Agriculture and Rural Leaders, whose members are key farm and rural policy lawmakers from the United States and Canada. When the Legislature is not in session, he works on an Osceola County dairy farm.

Johnson is a member of chambers of commerce in eight northwest Iowa communities and is involved in various dairy, cattle, farm, agribusiness and natural resources, wildlife and conservation organizations. He is a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ashton.

“I am sincerely grateful for the overwhelming support I have received in the past and I will continue to work hard to earn the trust and support of northwest Iowans again in the upcoming election,” said Johnson. “There is so much at stake as we work toward leading Iowa’s comeback.”
