Governor touts his record of expanding health care to 57,000 Iowa children

DES MOINES – Governor Chet Culver today toured Genesis Health System in Davenport, which has been named one of the 100 “best connected” medical facilities in the United States for the seventh straight year.

“I am committed to making Iowa the most connected state in the nation,” Culver said. “Health care is also at the top of my agenda. Genesis is an example of how both can go hand-in-hand by using e-health technology to enhance health care.”

During a public forum with employees, Culver outlined his accomplishments in which access to affordable health care was expanded to 57,000 Iowa children – a particularly daunting task during an economic downturn. These accomplishments include:

·

The Kaiser Family Foundation found that Iowa has the third lowest percentage of uninsured citizens. The Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care’s study of health system efficiency ranked Iowa number one in the nation. Securing $17.7 million in federal funding to upgrade and enhance the Iowa Health System existing fiber network that provides connections to over 200 health care facilities. The Commonwealth Fund ranks Iowa first in the nation for children’s health care. Twelve month continuous Medicaid eligibility for children was enacted in 2008, automatically extending eligibility for children for one year. This allows families and health care providers to plan a course of treatment without fear or interruption of coverage. Through the Governor’s initiatives, some 80,000 Iowans have quit smoking. “I want to move this state forward and health care is at the top of my agenda,” Culver said. “I want every Iowan to have access to quality, affordable health care and I am determined to meet that goal.” ###
