Reluctant Candidate Stops in Iowa Today

Des Moines – Fred Thompson did nothing to improve his standing with Iowa caucus goers with some comments he made in South Carolina yesterday. At a campaign stop, Thompson, who has proven he is out of touch with foreign policy and American priorities during his campaign, failed to list renewable energy and investment in ethanol and wind as energy options besides oil.

Thompson advocated for drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge as a way to lower gas prices. When pushed, he said other energy options include coal and nuclear power.

“Being ignorant that the Soviet Union no longer exists may be a slip of the tongue,” said Carrie Giddins, Iowa Democratic Party Communications Director. “But completely disregarding an important segment of energy resources, especially those that are important to Iowa caucus goers, shows a complete lack of understanding about America’s needs.”

Thompson Ignored Ethanol and Renewable Energy Options. At a later stop in Anderson, Thompson said that other energy options include more coal and nuclear power, as well as undeveloped technologies. (Winston-Salem Journal, 12/06/07)
