Kim Schmett announces run for 3rd Congressional District seat

DES MOINES – Today, Clive Republican Kim Schmett announced his run for United States Congress in the 3rd Congressional District.

Schmett, 55, says the district needs a representative who will fight for lower taxes, fiscal responsibility and more quality jobs for Iowa workers.

“My goal in Congress is to rein in spending, so people can keep the money they have worked so hard to earn,” said Schmett. “They should be able to spend it on their families, not support a bloated government. For far too long, government has failed to weed out inefficiencies and waste. Congress just passed a Democrat budget bill that will cut the earned income credit in half and increase an average family’s taxes by $3,000 dollars. Too often, politicians forget that it’s the people’s money first, not theirs.”

Schmett, a veteran of the U.S. Army, is the executive director of the state association for children’s homes and shelters. He is the former director of the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals, and served as the chief of staff for former Congressman Greg Ganske.

He says we need to focus on working families, especially in light of recent factory and business closings in the district.

“Families today are strapped with high energy bills, high health care bills and insecurity about the future,” said Schmett. “We need to instill confidence for working families. I will be a leader in making sure our communities are safe, our schools are accountable and that health care is readily accessible.”

Schmett says he will focus on bringing new job opportunities to the 12 counties in the 3rd District. He believes this district has a unique opportunity, given its rural and urban blend.

“I want to bring new, high-paying jobs to the entire district,” said Schmett. “Iowa has the best communities for businesses to develop, grow and expand. With agri-business rapidly growing in our rural areas, to the efforts being put forth by our urban areas, I look forward to working with both to identify new areas for expansion.”

Schmett lives in Clive with his wife, Connie.
