Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced that Iowa Legal Aid is receiving a $125,800 AmeriCorps grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service. In addition, each AmeriCorps member who completes a full term of services of 1,700 hours will earn a $4,725 education award payable to a qualified educational institution or lender.

“AmeriCorps volunteers will help Iowa Legal Aid provide valuable services to more low-income Iowans,” Harkin said. “I am pleased that Iowa Legal Aid is receiving this important funding.”

Iowa Legal Aid AmeriCorps members provide legal and related services for under-served and at-risk populations including victims of crime, the elderly, veterans and low-income people across the state of Iowa. Members conduct outreach and assist interpretation and translation services to low-income minorities and English as a Second Language communities. Additionally, AmeriCorps members recruit volunteers to increase the impact in the communities in which they serve. Offices are located in Cedar Rapids, Council Bluffs, Davenport, Des Moines, Dubuque, Iowa City, Mason City, Ottumwa, Sioux City and Waterloo.

AmeriCorps members serve in hundreds of nonprofit organizations, public agencies, and community and faith-based organizations, in rural and urban communities throughout the nation. They mentor youth, build affordable housing, help communities respond to disasters, and build the capacity of nonprofit groups to extend and improve their impact by leveraging volunteers.
