U.S. Sen. Harkin: At Harkin’s urging, Postal Service grants Windsor Heights own zip code 6/26/2008 Contact: Jennifer Mullin / Semonti Mustaphi (202) 224-3254 Iowa Senator introduced legislation to give Windsor Heights own ZIP code Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced that the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) agreed to give the people of Windsor Heights their own ZIP code; to be implemented by July of 2009. Currently, the residents of Windsor Heights share three ZIP codes with surrounding communities Des Moines and Urbandale. Confusion between the ZIP codes and city boundaries has caused delays in mail delivery, an increased amount of undelivered mail and numerous complaints from frustrated residents. “If you look up the word ‘persistence’ in the dictionary, you will see a map of the city of Windsor Heights,” said Harkin. “They took up the cause of getting their own zip code many years ago, and their efforts have paid off. I’m glad I could help in their efforts.” Earlier this year, Senator Harkin made it clear to the USPS that Windsor Height’s predicament was a priority to him by introducing legislation, which Senator Grassley co-sponsored, to provide Windsor Heights with its own ZIP code. A companion bill was introduced in the House of Representatives by Iowa Rep. Leonard Boswell. |
