Latham Campaign: First On Air in Race with Launch of Statewide Radio Ad 7/29/2008 Press Release | July 29, 2008 LATHAM FOR CONGRESS FIRST ON AIR IN RACE WITH LAUNCH OF STATEWIDE RADIO AD RECORD FUNDRAISING ALLOWS FOR EARLY MESSAGING ON TOM LATHAM'S HARD WORK TO LOWER GAS AND ENERGY PRICES FOR IOWA FAMILIES Ames, IA - Iowa Congressman Tom Latham's campaign launched the first mass media advertising of the 2008 campaign this week with a statewide radio ad highlighting Latham's work to lower gas and energy prices for Iowa families. The sixty second ad reinforces Latham's continued commitment to renewable energy but also discusses the need for Congress to work immediately to increase domestic energy supplies that America controls. "$4.00 a gallon gas hurts Iowa families," notes Latham in the ad. "And they're frustrated with leaders in Congress for not doing more about it - and they have every right to be." "I have always been, and will continue to be, a strong supporter of alternative energy research and production, but we need to work for solutions that get Iowans from point A to point B without busting their family budget." Latham has been working in Congress on legislation aimed at increasing our domestic supply of affordable that will lower gas and energy prices through the increased use of our current resources, to include off-shore drilling and drilling in ANWR. The Democrat controlled Congress, led by Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), has blocked all votes on increasing domestic energy supplies while Iowa families continue to pay record process at the pump. And, Iowans shouldn't expect Democratic Speaker Pelosi to allow a vote on measures that could lower energy prices any time soon as The Washington Post declared in a July 25th editorial; "Instead of dealing with the issue on the merits, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), a staunch opponent of offshore drilling, has simply decreed that she will not allow a drilling vote to take place on the House floor." The statewide radio ad by Latham for Congress comes early in the race because the campaign's strong financial success allows for the early message. "We continue our pace of the strongest fundraising in the history of Latham for Congress," noted Latham's campaign manager Matt Hinch. "This allows Congressman Latham to engage Iowans early about the issue he's heard most about from countless conversations he's had with voters over the past two years." In the most recent financial reports, Latham's campaign reported a ten-to-one cash on hand advantage of $832,388 over that of Becky Greenwald, the Democratic candidate in the race who reported only $81,940 cash on hand with pending debts of $16,806. According to federal reports filed by her campaign, at least 26% of all the money raised by Greenwald was contributed by herself and her family members. |
