U.S. Rep. Braley: Statement on Iowa attorney general filing charges against Agriprocessors, Inc. 9/9/2008 Contact: Nicole Buseman, Press Secretary nicole.buseman@mail.house.gov (202) 225-2911 (office) (202) 297-6725 (cell) Washington, DC – Rep. Bruce Braley (D-Iowa) released the following statement after the Iowa Attorney General’s Office today filed charges against Agriprocessors, Inc. for violations of Iowa’s child labor laws at their Postville, Iowa plant. The charges allege more than 9,000 misdemeanor violations of child labor laws, each punishable by up to 30 days in jail or a fine: “This action by Attorney General Miller sends a strong message that Iowa and Iowans will not tolerate the practice of hiring children for dangerous work in factories and packing plants,” Braley said. “These charges allege widespread violations and apparent disregard for Iowa’s child labor laws by Agriprocessors. I look forward to these charges being prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, and I hope that justice will be served in the end.” |
