ADVOCATES CHALLENGE SEN. GRASSLEY TO REPRESENT THE PEOPLE OF IOWA, NOT HEALTH INDUSTRY INTERESTS

Individuals from Around the State to Demonstrate Outside Main Gate as Grassley Concludes IowaState Fair Visit

Des Moines, IA – On Friday, August 21, 2009, Iowans from across the state will join the Health Care for America Now (HCAN) campaign – the nation’s largest health care campaign – to express concern about Iowa Senator Grassley’s stance on Health Care reform. Representatives of farm, labor, faith, small business, health care providers, advocates, and community organizations who find the Iowa Senator’s recent public remarks detrimental to the reform process will demonstrate outside the main gate of the Iowa State Fair. The demonstrators will raise awareness about the role of health industry money and partisan politics in resolving our health care crisis. The action is timed to coincide with the conclusion of Sen. Grassley’s well-publicized State Fair visit. Many people -- eager for an opportunity to make their opinions known -- will attend from communities where Sen. Grassley makes no public appearances during the August recess.

Volunteers will also be going door-to-door in the fairgrounds neighborhood to talk to the public about the urgent need for health care reform. Residents will be asked to sign postcards to Members of Congress asking them to make health insurance more affordable and will give everyone more choice in the health insurance marketplace, including the choice of a new public health insurance option.
