OCT. 1 DEADLINE APPROACHING FOR APPLICATION FOR NOMINATION TO PRESTIGIOUS ACADEMIES

WASHINGTON, DC – Iowa Congressman Tom Latham announced that students in Iowa’s 4th Congressional District interested in applying to the U.S. service academies for the 2010 school year have until Oct. 1, 2009, to contact his office for nominations.

To gain acceptance to one of the five U.S. service academies, applicants must receive the nomination of an authorized person, which includes members of the U.S. House and Senate.

The service academies include the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Nominations are required for all but the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, to which appointments are made on the basis of an annual nationwide competition. Applicants must be between 17 and 22 years old, single with no children and a United States citizen.

The U.S. military academies are among the most competitive and distinguished undergraduate universities in the country. They provide students with a full four-year scholarship and a career as a commissioned officer in the United States Armed Services upon graduation. Appointments are highly competitive, with the academies selecting candidates based on evidence of character, scholarship, leadership ability, physical aptitude, medical fitness, goals and motivation.

“Students accepted into one of our nation’s prestigious service academies take on an incredible and rewarding challenge,” Congressman Latham said. “I’m always proud when someone from Iowa’s 4th Congressional District makes that kind of commitment to themselves and to their country.”

Those interested in applying should contact Jim Oberhelman in Congressman Latham’s Fort Dodge office at (515) 573-2738.
