DCCC: Latham says no to supporting America’s troops
10/8/2009

Despite two wars and an ever increasing strain on military families, today Representative Tom Latham voted no on giving our troops the pay-raise and affordable health care they more than earned through their service and sacrifice for America.

“Time and again, Representative Tom Latham talks about supporting the troops but today he voted no on providing the pay-raise and affordable health care they and their families need in these tough economic times,” said Ryan Rudominer, National Press Secretary for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “While our military pledges to leave no soldier behind on the battlefield, today Representative Latham was all too willing to play politics and leave their funding behind in Washington. Our troops and their families deserve better.”

Background

· The Conference Report accompanying H.R. 2647, The National Defense Authorization Act of FY2010, will provide significant force protection and troop support measures for the men and women of our Armed Services. [H.R. 2647. #770, 10/8/09].

· The measure provides increased funding for Force Protection, including:

o $6.7 billion for mine-resistant ambush protected vehicles;

o $1.3 billion to upgrade Abrams tanks and Bradley fighting vehicles; and

o $2.0 billion for improvised explosive device jammers.

· It also provides $28 billion for defense health-care programs and a 3.4% pay increase for military personnel.
