State Rep. Dick Taylor, D-Cedar Rapids, announced his resignation from Iowa House District 33 Monday, effective immediately.

Taylor said in a press release that after nine years in the House, "it’s time for me to focus full-time on my family.”

In an interview with IowaPolitics.com, Taylor elaborated that he was resigning because of health issues in the family. "My wife has been sick and I lost my son. I haven't got any help to take care of her," Taylor said.

Taylor was elected to the House in a special election in 2000. His sudden resignation will force a second special legislative election this year. Taylor and his wife, Jan, have lived in Cedar Rapids for 49 years and have been married for 54 years.

After receiving Taylor’s letter of resignation today, Gov. Chet Culver has five days to set the special election.
