Students involved in 4th annual event to design, build solar home

Washington, DC – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today met with students from Iowa State University’s Solar Decathlon team who are in Washington to compete in the fourth annual Solar Decathlon. Students Tim Lentz and Scott Schrage, along with Professor Ulrike Passe, are part of the first team from Iowa State to design, build and enter a home in the competition sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy.

“I am very proud of the hard work these students are putting into this incredible challenge,” said Harkin. “This experience will be tremendously valuable to the students both professionally and personally.”

Iowa State’s team is one of 20 university teams from across the nation that entered homes in this year’s competition. The houses are evaluated on 10 categories, including architecture, market viability and engineering.
