Tickets available online and at UNItix locations starting at 8:30 a.m. CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Tickets to hear the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet at the University of Northern Iowa will go on sale at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 8. Tickets will be available at all UNItix locations, by phone at (319) 273-4TIX (4849), or online at http://www.uni.edu/dalailama. There is reserved seating for both sessions. The Dalai Lama will present "The Power of Education" in a keynote address for the 2010 Joy Cole Corning Distinguished Leadership Lecture Series at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 18, in the McLeod Center. Tickets cost $50, $25 and $15, plus a $2-per-ticket handling charge. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. and will close at 1:45 p.m. "The Power of Education" will focus on the importance of education in an increasingly global society, the role of education in developing socially responsible citizens and the impact an individual can have on the world. On the morning of May 18, the Dalai Lama will participate in a panel discussion about violence-prevention education rom 9:30 to 11 a.m. in the McLeod Center. The Dalai Lama and other distinguished panelists will discuss ways in which we, as individuals and as a society, can address issues of violence, promote civility and enhance understanding through education. Tickets cost $15, plus a $2-per-ticket handling charge. Doors open at 8 a.m. and will close at 9:15 a.m. A limited number of tickets are available at no charge to UNI students. When UNI students reserve their tickets, they will receive a voucher that must be redeemed for tickets April 19-23. Remaining student seats will go on sale to the public after April 23. UNI students must show a valid student ID with their ticket the day of the event. Leading up to May 18, UNI and community partners will host a series of events to help build awareness of the Dalai Lama. Details are being finalized for educational displays, movies, meals, presentations and courses. A suggested reading list has been compiled, and University Book & Supply will host four Community Conversations -- Jan. 28, Feb. 25, March 25 and April 29 -- to discuss four books from that list.
