One Iowa: More than 18,000 petition postcards to greet Iowa legislators 1/11/2010 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE JANUARY 11, 2010 CONTACT JUSTIN UEBELHOR 515-288-4019 x 205 515-333-2525 (cell) justin@oneiowa.org "Don't amend the constitution to hurt Iowa families!" (Des Moines, IA) Today, volunteers for One Iowa will begin to deliver more than 18,000 petition postcards to legislators asking them to reject a constitutional amendment that would deny the freedom to marry to gay and lesbian couples. Supporters of equality will also be on hand Tuesday to attend Governor Culver’s State of the State Address. "Iowans respect fairness and equality and value diversity in their communities. They don't want to see their neighbors denied vital protections," said One Iowa Executive Director Carolyn Jenison. Petition signers come from all across the state, in every House and Senate district, and in communities large and small. Constituent postcards from each district will be hand delivered to representatives and senators by One Iowa volunteers. A full set of petition signatures will be delivered to Governor Culver and to legislative leaders including Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal, Speaker of the House Pat Murphy, and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy. A separate release will be sent on Tuesday with photos of the petition delivery. These photos will be available for publication. FULL PETITION TEXT: "At a time when Iowans are losing their homes and still rebuilding after the devastating 2008 floods, we should be focusing on issues of common concern to all Iowa families such as the economy, health care, and education, rather than focusing on divisive issues and amending the constitution to hurt Iowa families. As an Iowan committed to fairness, I respect the Iowa Supreme Court's unanimous decision allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry and I urge you to oppose any attempts to amend the Constitution to overturn that decision." One Iowa is the state’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) advocacy organization, committed to full equality for LGBT individuals, including the freedom to marry.
