Take Five: Iowa families urged to take five before spring break 3/3/2010 In the wake of a new national report showing a surge in teenage substance abuse, and with Spring Break right around the corner for many Iowa youth, the Partnership for a Drug-Free Iowa/Face It Together is calling on Iowa parents to Take Five and talk with kids to prevent alcohol and drug abuse. “We’re very troubled by the news of an upswing in teen alcohol and marijuana use in the U.S.,” said Peter Komendowski, President of the Iowa Partnership, which presents the annual Take Five program. “The reported rise in youth substance abuse and softening of anti-drug attitudes is a dangerous combination, making it even more important that parents engage with children on this subject.” According to the Partnership for a Drug-Free America’s 2009 Partnership Attitude Tracking Study, released Tuesday, U.S. teens used more alcohol, Ecstasy and marijuana last year, compared to the year before. The study shows the increase in youth substance abuse occurred at the same time that more teens perceived drug use and drinking as beneficial and more acceptable. Governor Culver has proclaimed Friday, March 5th, Take Five Day in Iowa, a time for parents and other adult caregivers to spend a few minutes talking with children about the dangers of using drugs. “While there is no inoculation against substance abuse, parental involvement can greatly reduce the odds of teens drinking or using drugs,” said Gary Kendell, Director of the Governor’s Office of Drug Control Policy. “Heading into Spring Break, now is a good time to start or continue a dialogue with children, so they know you expect them to play it safe.” As part of the Partnership’s Take Five program, tip sheets for parents were sent home to parents of Iowa 5th graders. Additionally, free parent pocket guides are available at Casey’s General Stores. The Take Five program is sponsored by Iowa Health System.
