IowaPolitics.com: King Considering Challenge To Harkin 1/18/2007 By Chris Dorsey IowaPolitics.com Iowa Congressman Steve King, R-Kiron, told IowaPolitics.com this week he is not ruling out a run for the U.S. Senate in 2008. The outspoken Iowa Republican has been a strong proponent for strengthening the nation's borders and not granting amnesty to illegal immigrants. He would face Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin if he chooses to run in 2008. King knows the challenge that would lie ahead for him if he were to pursue the Senate post. Harkin has defeated more sitting members of Congress than any other lawmaker on Capitol Hill. Congressman King said he continues to construct a statewide network and is building his warchest for a possible run. However, he said he has not made a decision about his future. "I am not a person who does this for me," he said. "I appreciate the privilege of serving people every day." With Democrats controlling the Congress, King warned that defunding the war in Iraq has long-term implications. He said Democrats are pushing to stop funding the Iraq war and called that initiative a “national-destiny-changing initiative.” “Whatever they do is encouraging the enemy,” King said. “(Defunding the war) will cost American bloodshed in Iraq.” To fight the global war on terror, Iraq is key, King said. If the United States were to pull out of Iraq, it would allow terrorist to take control and find sanctuary in the region, the outspoken lawmaker said. “We need to solve this problem right here, right now,” King said. |
