IowaPolitics.com: Pataki OKs Staff Departures; Prez Run Unlikely 3/15/2007 By Chris Dorsey IowaPolitics.com Former New York Gov. George Pataki has told supporters he cannot guarantee he is going to run for president this cycle and has given his blessing for them to join other presidential campaigns. A source close to the governor said his focus is currently on policy issues and not campaigning for the White House. Former Iowa Senate Majority Leader Stewart Iverson announced his departure today, and more departures are likely in the days ahead, according to a campaign source. Iverson has left Pataki's team to become the newest member of Team Romney. Iverson, who spent nearly 19 years in the Iowa Legislature, becomes an adviser to former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney after spending last year with Pataki's PAC. "He has a long-standing reputation at the Statehouse, and across Iowa, for his unflinching conservatism and fiscal responsibility," Romney said of Iverson in a release. Iverson is not the first Pataki backer to jump ship this election cycle. Back in November 2006, Ed Failor Jr., a leader of Iowans for Tax Relief, left Pataki's PAC and eventually joined on with U.S. Sen. John McCain. Des Moines lawyer Craig Schoenfeld, who served as director of Pataki's 21st Century PAC through the summer, and Loras Schulte also left in November. |
