U.S. Sen. Grassley: More than $12.2 million to Iowa from Health and Human Services

$4 Million for Bioterrorism and Public Health Emergencies Preparedness

WASHINGTON – Sen. Chuck Grassley today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded $12,247,676 in grants to the Bethany Christian Services of Northwest Iowa, Drake University, Iowa State Department of Public Health, North Iowa Community Action Organization, Palmer College of Chiropractic and the University of Iowa.

“I’m glad Iowa will be receiving these funds to pursue research in these important medical fields,” Grassley said. “This money will help make sure Iowans are receiving cutting edge, top notch treatment.”

Bethany Christian Services of Northwest Iowa in Orange City was awarded $600,000 from the Administration on Children, Youth, and Families- Family and Youth Services Bureau. The funds will help pay for a project titled “Keyed-In to Abstinence.”

Drake University was awarded $191,672 from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. The funds will help pay for a project titled “Reproductive and Behavioral Effects of Genistein.”

The Iowa State Department of Public Health was awarded two grants totaling $4,413,180. Below is the allocation of funding.

$4,280,453- from the Office of the Secretary, Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response. The funds will help pay for a program titled “Hospital Preparedness Program,” which helps hospitals prepare for and respond to bioterrorism and public health emergencies.

$132,727- from the National Center for Environmental Health. The funds will help pay for a project titled “Iowa Department of Public Health’s Healthy Homes Initiative.”

The Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport was awarded $110,592 from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. The funds will help pay for a project titled “Expanding EBM and Research Across the Palmer College of Chiropractic.”

The North Iowa Community Action Organization in Mason City was awarded $231,847 from the Office of Public Health Services, Office of Women’s Health. The funds will help pay for a project titled “Advancing System Improvements to Support Targets for Health People 2010.”

The University of Iowa was awarded three grants totaling $6,700,385. Below is the allocation of funds.

$5,883,202- from the National Center for Research Resources. The funds will help pay for a project titled “University of Iowa Clinical and Translational Science Program.”

$428,631- from the Health Resources Services Agency. The funds will help pay for a program titled “Geriatric Education Centers.”

$388,552- from the Nation Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders. The funds will help pay for a project titled “Stimuli Promoting the Survival of Spiral Ganglion Neurons.”
